Many people use coaching, mentoring, tutoring, consulting and counseling interchangeably. This partly arises from the way the word ‘coach’ is used in sports, where a coach is also supposed to advise on the right skill, right attitude, etc.
Coaching is different from consulting. A consultant uses his experience, whereas a coach is not supposed to leverage his experience in solving client’s challenges.
Likewise, counseling seeks to resolve the aftermath of past feelings and experiences, whilst a professional coach helps the client deal with here and now and taking charge of his/her life going forward.
A mentor helps the client reflect on mentor’s experiences and draw lessons. A professional Executive or a Life coach, on the other hand, does not offer any such framework, and acts only as a sounding board in a private, respectful and confidential setting, so that the client is free to explore her own feelings, dilemmas, anxieties, concerns, apprehensions, worries without fear of rejection or invalidation, and feels encouraged to examine herself and evolve her own options for dealing with life’s or work’s challenges. Even post coaching, they feel empowered to deal with emerging challenges without the need to refer to coach on an ongoing basis. And most people do get immensely benefited by coaching.
In short, the best way to understand what coaching is, before seeking to benefit from coaching, it is best to refer at the outset to the apex body of professional coach community, International Coach Federation (ICF)’s definition of coaching.
ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
